Tom Brady Teams Up With OLPC

Jeff Bertolucci

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, best known for scoring Super Bowl victories and supermodels, is buying 1,500 laptops as part of the One Laptop Per Child program to send low-cost computers to children in developing nations. According to a Boston Herald report, Brady will send the solar-powered laptops to Uganda, where his sister Nancy is doing humanitarian work.

Well, good for Tom. Maybe there's more to life than football and dating every model in the Victoria's Secret catalog. (Or maybe not.) Still, it's hard to resist the irony of struggling OLPC-it's had a difficult journey getting its low-cost Linux portables to market-teaming up with the hobbling Tom Brady, who's out for the season with a knee injury.

Will Tom become the pitchman for OLPC?   Perhaps he and Gisele can promote Amazon's $399 Give a Laptop, Get a Laptop deal.   Then again, OLPC may want to go with a celeb who projects a bit more gravitas. Where's Bono when you need him?
